The acting in this film is off the charts. Becoming close with what seems to be new allies, a new plot begins to unfold, adding a huge layer of reality to the movie as a whole. On this occasion, Lee takes us to back to Vietnam where he's able to explore the inequality of African-American soldiers who were under the impression that the very freedoms they were fighting for didn't actually apply to them when they returned home to the U.S. Lee adopts a back-and-forth chronology of the experiences of his characters during the war and the present day and intersperses it with historical facts that support his argument. After some reluctant dealings with Otis’s old flame, Tiên Luu (Lê Y Lan), and French smuggler Desroche (Jean Reno), Da Bloods plan to head off into the jungle, but not before Paul’s son, David (Jonathan Majors), makes a surprise appearance to join his father’s team. Going back is not just about financial windfalls, it's also about making good on a delayed promise. Arriving on the aftermath of the killing of George Floyd and the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter campaign, the release of the film couldn't have been more pertinent given the story's central theme. In addition, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Norm Lewis, Clarke Peters, and the eventual joining of Jonathan Majors, all played off each other as if they were real-life friends. It's now streaming on Netflix and I highly recommend checking it out. Do the Right Thing is one of my favourite films of all time and BlacKkKlansman easily made my Top 10 list of 2018. Netflix has recently released it for all subscribers to view, and although a lot of the subject matter may be a lot to take in, I believe, especially due to the timing of the release and how it relates to society today, it is an essential piece of filmmaking.
